Equipment

  • Tall 12-ounce Glass
  • Bar Spoon or Teaspoon
  • Citrus Juicer

Ingredients

For the Drink

  • 1 cup ice (large cubes preferably)
  • ½ cup fresh-squeezed orange juice (about 2 oranges)
  • ½ cup 100% cranberry juice (not cocktail)
  • 1 tablespoon pomegranate syrup or good grenadine

For Garnish

  • 1 wheel orange wheel
  • a few fresh cranberries

Instructions

  • Fill: Fill your glass all the way to the top with ice. The more ice, the colder the drink stays and the longer the layers hold.
  • Pour the orange juice: Pour the fresh orange juice over the ice. It should fill the glass about halfway. Set the glass down and grab your spoon.
  • The spoon trick: Hold the spoon upside down, with the bowl of the spoon curving against the inside wall of the glass. Position the back of the spoon right at the surface of the orange juice — not above it, not below it. This is the step that makes or breaks the layers.
  • Pour the cranberry juice: Gently pour the cranberry juice over the back of the spoon. It will spread out and settle on top of the orange juice instead of plunging through. Pour slowly — rushing it is what causes the muddy look.
  • The sunrise base: Drizzle the pomegranate syrup down the inside of the glass. It will sink to the bottom and slowly bleed upward, creating that layered sunrise effect. Let it settle for about 30 seconds before you garnish.
  • Garnish: Slide an orange wheel onto the rim and drop a few fresh cranberries into the glass. They float right at the boundary between the layers. Serve immediately.

Notes

Key tips: Use fresh orange juice for best layering. Large ice cubes melt slower and keep layers distinct. For kids, omit pomegranate syrup and add sparkling water. Cocktail version: add vodka or gin after cranberry layer. Store juices separately for up to 2 days.
