Equipment

  • Coffee Maker or French Press
  • Small saucepan
  • Glass jar with lid
  • Two tall glasses
  • Measuring Cup

Ingredients

Classic Syrup

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

For the Coffee

  • 4 tablespoons medium-roast ground coffee
  • 2 cups water, for brewing

For Each Glass

  • 2 tablespoons classic syrup
  • 1 glass ice, large cubes
  • 1/2 to 1 cup whole milk or oat milk
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  • Make the classic syrup first: combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir gently until it turns from cloudy to completely clear, about 5 minutes. Do not let it go longer or you are on your way toward caramel. Set aside to cool, or speed it up with a cold water bath.
  • Brew the coffee double-strength: use 4 tablespoons of medium-roast ground coffee with 2 cups of water in whatever you normally brew with. Yes, it feels like too much. That is the trick — the ice will dilute it.
  • Fill both tall glasses to the top with ice. Pour the hot coffee straight over the ice, dividing it evenly, and leave about an inch at the top for milk.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of the classic syrup to each glass and stir immediately, before the syrup sinks to the bottom.
  • Pour in the milk slowly — a quarter cup for a coffee-forward glass, closer to a half cup for the creamy version. Watch the ribbons settle before you stir.
  • Taste before deciding anything. If it tastes sharp, stir in a small pinch of salt. If it tastes thin, use bigger ice cubes next time. If it tastes exactly right, that is the day you stop ordering out.

Notes

Storage: double-strength coffee keeps in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to a week; classic syrup keeps for two to three weeks — shake it if the sugar settles. Freeze leftover brewed coffee as ice cubes so your drink never waters down. For dairy-free, oat milk is the closest match. If you only have dark roast, add a little extra syrup. Decaf works but brew 5 tablespoons for the same 2 cups of water.
